Welcome to South End

The South End of Boston is home to unique architecture, some of Boston's most innovative restaurants, elegant Victorian brick row houses, and many cultural as well as artistic happenings. One of Boston's larger neighborhoods, the South End is bordered by the Back Bay to the north and Roxbury to the south. Like the Back Bay, Boston's South End was built upon the filling of a former tidal marsh. Many of the South End's ornate streets are named after regional cities and towns such as Newton, Brookline, Waltham, and Wareham. With its first street plan laid in 1801 by Charles Bulfinch, designer of the Boston Statehouse, the South End was centered on a large oval-shaped park. Bulfinch also designed Columbia Square, known today as Blackstone and Franklin Squares. This area thrived throughout the remainder of the century and most of the 20th century until the neighborhood suffered from neglect. However, after a long standing revitalization campaign the South End is one of Boston's most popular places to live, blending many of the best elements of the city and arts. When in town be sure to visit one of the many fine dinning restaurants on Tremont Street and for your art kick either the Calderwood Pavilion, or the Boston Center for the Arts are note worthy.
