A B C Children's Center of San Diego

On January 2, 1990, ABC Day Care and Preschool was opened at 12145 Alta Carmel Court. Staff included were Director Teresa IlIich and seven other teachers. In September 1990, fifty children ranging from 12 months to 4 years old were enrolled. ABC was remodeled in 1993 and renamed ABC Children’s Center of Rancho Bernardo. It was also the time when Panda and Mice rooms were added. The Cuddle Bear room and office were enlarged (Yes, the office used to be smaller). The school was expanded, adding the Wild Catz, Dines (originally Dinosaurs), and kindergarten classrooms. The playground was also expanded for more running room for its active young children.

John and Arleen Gruber joined the team as management heads on April 1, 1994. It was then in the year 1995 that we started computerizing our bookkeeping. On August of 1997, Sue Spangler started as assistant director, and she became director on 1999. In 2004, we’re grateful for the very dedicated parents who helped transform our backyard to natural space by building a deck, a garden, and a stone path. We had our accreditation process through the National Association of Young Children on 2005. After extensive staff training on such things as curriculum, assessments, health and safety; purchasing special items to enhance the school and its program; and lots of reports, the school became accredited on April 30, 2005.

It was in June of 2006 when our kindergarten room was transformed into a cute nursery for a brand new infant program. By the year 2010, our records show that we have had 2563 children enrolled at ABC in the fast 20 years. 2014 was the year of the loss of John Gruber.
ABC turned 25 years old on January 2, 2015. That same year in the month of June, Pooja Sharma joined the team at the management level. On July 2016, ABC team implements the child focused and directed learning approach, improvising on classroom techniques.
