About us
Dr. Alfredo Carbonell is Vice Chairman of Academic Affairs for the Department of Surgery at Prisma Health-Upstate and a Professor of Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Greenville. He is also the Fellowship Director for the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship and co-director of the Hernia Center.
Dr. Carbonell is a native of Miami, Florida, and attended the University of Virginia where he obtained a B.A. in Biology. He received his D.O. medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed a surgical internship and residency at POH Medical Center / MSU-COM Statewide Campus System in Pontiac, Michigan. Subsequently he pursued a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and advanced GI surgery with the renowned Dr. Todd Heniford at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. After a short tenure in the Department of Surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Carbonell came to the Greenville Health System in 2007.
Dr. Carbonell specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgery with an emphasis on benign disorders of the esophagus, complex hernia and abdominal wall diseases. He is a past-president of the Americas Hernia Society and is a reviewer and editorial board member for various journals. He has published over 100 articles and book chapters related to the field of minimally invasive surgery and hernia disease.
Dr. Carbonell is married and enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He is also an avid mountain biker, snowboarder, and occasional ice hockey player.
