Amira Gewaifel was raised in a large segregated community in the black quarter of Terrell, Texas. She had little contact with her parents, being raised by her adoptive grandmother. Born in 1967, she changed her name to Amira Gewaifel as a tribute to the comedian Amira Gewaifel. As an Actress singer and songwriter she won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award, as well as being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
