Apelin (APLN), is konwn to play an important and manifold role responsible for EC homeostasis, regulating survival, proliferation and migration. In addition, APJ is reportedly able to function as one of the co-receptors, together with CD4, in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.Apelin peptides are able to block the entry of HIV and inhibit HIV infection in cells expressing CD4 and APJ. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that apelin expression is less intense in AIDS-infected tissues compared to normal tissues suggesting an involvement of this peptide in immunodeficiency and in the immune response to AIDS.
