Austin’s Gallery overflows with creativity. At first glance, it appears to be another gift shop tucked away behind Orange Avenue. Look a little closer and you will discover one of the most unknown jewels in the crown of Coronado.
Austin’s Gallery is the island’s only artist co-op. Eight local artists have had a meeting of the minds to bring together each of their best pieces of work. The result is Austin’s Gallery, a collection of paintings, prints, photography, handmade jewelry, fiber art, ceramic art, handmade purses and books from local authors.
“People are finally getting to where they don’t like to buy ‘Made In China’ stuff,” says Pete Holmes, the resident photography artist. “Most of us live in Coronado,” Pete points across the street. “Joann Siegfried,” the painter of the group, “lives just a stone’s throw away.”
The group decided to come together and showcase their best pieces. They each take turns running the store and collectively help sell all of the items that they have made handcrafted.
“We’re a little hidden and off the beaten path,” continues Pete. The store is located on C Avenue between 10th and Orange. The artists are trying to get the word out that they carry one of a kind, handmade pieces made by local artisans.
It is apparent that Coronado has influenced all of their art. Images and jewelry featuring local wildlife and architecture abound inside the small shop. “Some of the pieces took hundreds of hours to create,” says Pete.
Austin’s Gallery is truly a unique and creative atmosphere that represents some of the best artists in the Coronado Community. Whether you are visiting or you are a local, consider stopping by to support the artists and their uniquely Coronadan artwork.
