Axel’s Waterfront Cafe’ is operated by fifth generation islanders and their kids. The small waterfront cafe’ is located at South Bass Island State Park at the western end of Catawba Avenue, about two miles from the Downtown District. The food, the view, and the family friendly atmosphere is worth the bike or golf cart ride to get there. Unpretentious, Axel’s offers a variety of sandwiches, salads, appetizers, breakfast items, handmade pizza, beverages and ice cream. The menu is pretty simple and the food is pretty amazing. Last year Axel’s rolled out the “Centennial” Burger in celebration of the National Park’s 100th Anniversary in 2016. With a few modifications the freshly ground, Prime Angus Sirloin half-pound patty is now the “Victory” Burger, a nod to Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial and the Hotel Victory that once dominated the 134-site State Park Campgrounds.
