Formed in 2010, Blackhawk Mining, LLC embarked on a series of acquisitions to consolidate premium coal reserves in the Central Appalachian Basin. From its humble beginnings, the company reached nearly 14 million tons of coal production in 2017 before sharpening its focus on metallurgical coal. Met coal is an integral ingredient in the production of steel as it becomes the catalyst to the primary source of carbon in the steelmaking process. Today, Blackhawk is a regional leader in coal mining with worldwide marketing capabilities operating eight mining complexes in southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky with approximately 2,000 employees.

Blackhawk operates eight mining complexes across Southern West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. We primarily mine and sell metallurgical coal, a critical ingredient in the production of steel. Metallurgical coal, also known as coking, is the primary source of carbon in the integrated steelmaking process.

Our mission is to operate in accordance with our five core pillars, with safety at the forefront. Today, Blackhawk Mining operates eight mining complexes in two states with approximately 2,000 employees. We pride ourselves on our commitment to safety, employee success and community engagement.

Blackhawk sells metallurgical coal to steel producers and industrial end users in the United States and three other continents.
