About us
Brian Hodgens, MD, is a fellowship-trained minimally invasive surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic and robotic surgery to fix abdominal wall and diaphragm hernias. Born and raised in Southern California, he completed medical school in San Diego and did his general surgery residency training in Hawaii, where he developed an interest in minimally invasive surgery while also meeting his wife. He joined the Prisma Health team to help build and expand a reflux and heartburn surgery practice and feels lucky to have joined such an experienced and kind collection of surgeons. Hodgens has roots in the Greenville area, as his grandfather was born and raised in Berea before joining the Navy and moving away and settling in California.
Dr. Hodgens specializes in foregut surgery, which deals with diseases of the esophagus and stomach. Conditions that he treats include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), swallowing disorders, achalasia, hiatal hernias, paraesophageal hernias, esophageal diverticula, gastroparesis, and other benign tumors of the esophagus and stomach. In his practice he is adept at completing the workup for these disorders as well as the surgical treatment and follow-up care. He works well with other specialties and providers to ensure that his patients have the most thorough and individualized plan possible. His primary goal is to educate patients on their conditions, explain all of the possible treatments, partake in shared decision-making with patients to determine the best treatment plan, and improve the quality of life of his patients.
Hodgens and his wife enjoy cooking, gardening, exploring the Appalachian mountains, playing with their dogs and falling in love with Greenville and its culture.
