You've booked your trip and packed your suitcase, but before you depart, take the time to vacation-proof your home. Summer months are popular vacation months, but with Spring Break happening around the country, these safety tips apply ANY time you’re away for an extended period.
Top tips for inside-the-house protection:
Install or set timers on interior lights. Giving the impression that someone is home can help in deterring burglars, who often look for crimes of opportunity.
Protect against power surges. You never know when a power surge may occur, so it's good to be prepared. Consider unplugging computers, TVs, stereo, and other electronics, or see that they are plugged safely into a surge protector.
Test the smoke alarms. See that all alarms are in working order and replace any batteries.
Don't post status updates. Don’t broadcast your vacation plans or location on social media. Even if you think it's only your friends or colleagues viewing your online profiles, it's safest not to leave any sort of opening for a possible burglar. Save the vacay update for after you’ve returned.
Top tips for outside the house:
Park a vehicle in the driveway. Keeping an extra vehicle in the driveway or asking a neighbor to park their vehicle might help deter potential burglars.
Arrange for lawn care. Think about having your landscaping tended to by a friendly neighbor or local service. This gives the appearance that you are home tending to your lawn.
Stop newspapers and mail. Consider requesting a hold for your mail and newspaper deliveries, or have them regularly picked up by a neighbor. You don't want to easily clue in a burglar to your absence by the mounting newspapers on your doorstep.
Don't leave spare keys outdoors. Collect any hidden spare keys from around the exterior of your home. Remember, many burglars know about popular hiding places, like beneath mats and in potted plants. Provide a spare key to a neighbor for emergencies.
Do you have proper homeowners insurance? The Bruce Blake State Farm Insurance Agency is here to help ensure your home’s proper protection.

It’s Misconception Monday. Today’s topic: What “No Fault” means concerning your homeowner’s insurance.
The term “No Fault” is often used in the insurance world. It is primarily used regarding personal injuries or medical payments arising from an automobile accident.
With home insurance, nearly every claim isn’t the homeowner’s “fault” per se. Think about fire, smoke, wind, hail, theft, vandalism, explosions, falling objects, pipe bursts, and even the weight of snow and ice. A homeowner does not want any of those events to happen, and most homeowners aren’t the reason they do occur.
So, while most home claims aren’t a person’s “fault,” the event still occurred, which makes it their claim.
The best way to avoid a home claim is to understand the potential risks. Then, proactively make an effort to avoid them. Some examples include:
- Don’t burn candles unattended (especially when you leave the house)
- Install a security system (to deter theft and vandalism)
- Turn the heat up when it’s cold (to avoid frozen pipes)
- Shovel roofs after heavy snow (to help prevent potential roof problems)
We are here to ensure you have the best protection for your home when you need it. Contact the Bruce Blake State Farm Insurance Agency today!
