IT is an OTOBRADER. When operating to set back prominent ears (otoplasty), this instrument slides under the skin of the front side of the ear to "abrade" (scrape) the surface of the ear cartilage along the planned new antihelical fold. This relaxes the cartilage and allows it bend more smoothly to create a properly curved fold once the shaping sutures are placed. This also makes it less likely the cartilage will "rebound" more toward its original abnormal shape. Many surgeons omit this helpful step - not me.
