They both do the same thing with the exception that the fully automatic is just that...it's fully automatic. If the power goes out the unit will automatically start and the generator restores the power to your home automatically. The electric start portable generator works similarly with the exception that when the power goes out someone needs to start the generator and manually turn on the transfer switch.
