The Ginger Man
About us
This restaurant was inspired by author J.P. Donleavy’s modern classic, The Ginger Man. The picaresque work tells the story of a young American studying at Ireland’s venerable Trinity College. The main character, Sebastian is dogged by vices of his own infatuation. And the book curates all of his charming misadventures with a brash honesty; one seldom seen in post World War II literature. Subsequently, upon publication, the book was initially banned in the United States and Ireland. For proprietors Michael and Pat Byron the novel represents the ideals of progressive society. Over the past thirty years, at this namesake restaurant, the City of Albany has experienced how The Byron’s translates J.P. Donleavy’s forward-thinking posture into the very best of food and wine and how we should all dare to eat…
