In this largely rural state, sophisticated medical services are concentrated primarily in Albuquerque. More than 40% of New Mexico's population is rural, yet only 10% of medical services are in rural areas. Rural residents with major medical diagnoses are required to travel long distances for comprehensive health care services. Medical access disparities can impede quality patient outcomes, particularly for the rural poor and racial/ethnic minorities. Having access to affordable lodging and support services may result in earlier diagnosis and treatment, and can reduce the financial burden to the family and the community.
