I totally agree with the previous two reviews. Mark (and Keith) did a tremendous amount of work on my 1990 BMW over the past three months. Mark is a very intelligent guy and communicates in very clear terms what the problem is and what your options are--and that skill is crucial especially when the customer is not all that mechanically savvy. He will offer to save you some money by not installing the most expensive or new OE part around, if that's what you want. (Some BMW specialty shops will only install new BMW parts.) He's very good at explaining the pros and cons for your options. My engine blew a bearing and he was able to find one for $500 from a friend, and even spent some (unpaid) time helping his friend extract it from his car and transport it to the shop. $2400 for a used engine, installed, is not bad at all. Their hourly rate could be considered a little high by some, but I have learned from past experience that you don't want to crimp on a labor rate when you're dealing with a beloved classic car. Even though I live in Acton I find their shop to be accessible because it is close to the Porter Square commuter rail station (and to Alewife T station). GPS is the fourth indie shop I've tried, and I won't be going anywhere else anytime soon.
