Sportsman Steel Safes was founded by Fred Hand, a AAA skeet shooter, in 1979. Fred saw a need for higher quality gun safes than what was available at the time. As one of the first modern gun safe makers, Fred was known for building gun safes more heavy-duty than other safes on the market. Where typical gun safes had 1/8" or 3/16" steel bodies, Fred designed thick 1/4" steel bodies with massive 1/2" thick doors. At the time it was revolutionary!
