Hapenstans is a community within a community that could not have fit in better than Hillcrest. Owner and founder Cheryle (who does not care to use her last name during business hours) started her salon at the age of 26 and brought her creative friends onboard to create an all around unique enterprise. The community of Hapenstans call themselves “the tribe” and there is no better way to describe it. Free form, punk rock stylists occupy the cool, hip salon on the second floor of a building overlooking University Avenue and the iconic Hillcrest sign. Cuts, styles, and coloring are all offered at a reasonable price because it is not about the money for Cheryle and her crew. “I definitely believe [Hapenstans] is a place that helps you find your own personal truth,” says Cheryle with a thoughtful smile. “I think that people initially come up here thinking that it is all the stuff we do to them and they find out that it’s really about how they feel about themselves by the end.” Natural products from very small lines are sold on premises, as well as hand-made crafts and several accessories. The tribe consists not only of stylists but of several tattoo artists, a body piercer, a massage therapist, esthetician and a spiritual life counselor. Often times return patrons can be seen just hanging out at Hapenstans because the energy is so invigorating and positive that it is hard to leave. Go to Hapenstans for more than just a haircut; go to Hapenstans to be a part of a communal experience that is missing from most businesses today.
