About us

Dr. Bowman specializes in Sports Medicine, having served at Team Orthopaedic Surgeon for Clemson University athletics since 1988 and caring for other upstate athletes at levels. His areas of expertise include Arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle; ACL reconstruction; and treatment of all sports related injuries. After graduating from West Virginia University, he received a Masters in Bioengineering from Clemson University, and then graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina. After his medical training, he served two years at Fort Lewis Washington as a Flight surgeon for the 9th Infantry. Dr. Bowman served his residency at Penn State Medical Center where he was mentored by Dr. Alex Kalenak, Team Orthopaedic Surgeon for Penn State University. Dr. Bowman returned to the Upstate in 1981, establishing Blue Ridge Orthopaedics in 1982. Blue Ridge Orthopaedics has since grown to include 20 Orthopaedic Surgeons and Primary Care Sports Medicine physicians who enjoy serving the community. He is an adjunct professor in Bioengineering at Clemson as well as Orthopaedic Director and Professor of MUSC AHEC Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. He has served on several committees for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North American, and the NCAA Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspect of Sports. He continues to serve on the Medical Aspect of Sports committee for the SC Medical Association; as President of the ACC Team Physician Society; and as a founding Board member for PlaySafe, a non-profit organization supplying 125 Certified Athletic Trainers to over 100,000 student athletes for 78 middle and high schools in 3 states. When not on the sidelines, he enjoys fishing and family time with his wife Mary, his children and his grandchildren.
