About us
Dr. Marquita Genies is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, specializing in pediatric hospital medicine.
Dr. Genies serves as the Vice Chair of Faculty Development, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion within the Department of Pediatrics and the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Postdoctoral Affairs at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her work is dedicated to advancing health equity in medical education and clinical care, with a particular focus on reducing healthcare disparities. She has extensive experience in recruiting, mentoring, and advancing underrepresented in medicine (UIM) trainees and has held numerous leadership positions at both local and national levels. Nationally, she has supported UIM trainees pursuing careers in academic medicine through her work with the Academic Pediatric Association New Century Scholars Resident Mentoring Program.
Dr. Genies earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Spelman College, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. She completed her pediatrics residency at the University of North Carolina and a General Academic Pediatrics Fellowship at Johns Hopkins.
As a leader in medical education, Dr. Genies focuses on addressing healthcare disparities by developing and implementing bias mitigation and anti-racism curricula to improve patient outcomes and healthcare access. She is particularly committed to enhancing health equity through workforce development, medical training, and patient-centered education. Her research and initiatives have been recognized with numerous awards, including the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Hospital Medicine's Jennifer Daru Award for contributions to the Journal of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. In 2021, her anti-racism curriculum received the Association of Pediatric Program Directors Spotlight on Education Award.
Additionally, Dr. Genies was awarded the Picker Gold Graduate Medical Education Challenge Grant from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to develop a culturally competent curriculum aimed at addressing vaccine hesitancy among historically marginalized communities. She is also a recipient of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Catalyst Awards for Transformation in Graduate Medical Education Grant, supporting her work in evaluating a multidisciplinary graduate medical education (GME) health equity simulation.
