About us

Oscar Olavarria, MD, MS, is a board-certified general surgeon with additional fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery. He specializes in bariatrics/weight loss surgery, reflux/heartburn, ulcer disease, hiatal hernias, achalasia, and abdominal wall reconstruction for hernia repair. When appropriate, Olavarria also utilizes endoscopic (incisionless), laparoscopic, and robotic techniques for the care of the entire spectrum of abdominal surgical issues, including disorders of the gallbladder and appendix, small and large bowel obstruction, perforated ulcers, diverticulitis, gastrointestinal tumors and solid organs (spleen, adrenal glands, and pancreas). Additionally, he performs upper endoscopies and colonoscopies.
Olavarria is committed to enhancing patients’ quality of life by guiding them through every step of their surgical journey. His approach focuses on ensuring an experience where patients feel supported physically and mentally, aiming for the best possible recovery and best possible outcomes.
Olavarria is an assistant professor of surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He has conducted extensive research and has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and over 40 national/international presentations. 
He is an active member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
