About Patricia Chapman

Caring for women throughout their lives, especially through pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period is how Patricia Chapman, CNM, describes what she does. As a Certified Nurse Midwife, she said she was interested in this field since she was a teen. “I observed my first birth in nursing school and was struck by the magical miracle of birth,” she says, adding, “I knew that OB was my calling.”

Patricia worked for several years as an RN on the labor and delivery floor before returning to school to become a midwife. She graduated from Goshen College, Goshen, IN, with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and from Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, Hyden, KY, with her master’s in nursing and midwifery.

One of the questions she is frequently asked is if she delivers babies at home. “I explain that midwives also work in hospitals and birth centers,” she says. Patricia has worked in hospitals, for an obstetrics and gynecology practice, and at a birth center. She is experienced with providing care at all stages of pregnancy from preconception care, care throughout pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period, as well as conducting childbirth classes and also in providing triage services for an obstetric emergency department.

Patricia’s philosophy is to provide evidence-based, patient-centered care based on relationship building and respect, using current research to guide her recommendations. She says her patients have taught her so much, including how individuals are affected by events and circumstances in their lives and how important listening, acceptance and respect are to everyone.

In her own words…

Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life?  My parents. They taught me patience, calmness, acceptance and encouraged analytical thinking.

What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it?  I worked in a pickle factory and I remember being soaked in pickle juice up to my knees and my fingers having cuts from the box dividers. It reinforced my desire to get further education.

What is your favorite food? Movie?  My favorite food is whatever someone else has prepared. My favorite movie is Shawshank Redemption.

What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up?  My best subjects were math/ science. My worst were typing and penmanship.

If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why?  Probably my grandparents, because I did not ever get enough time with them to get to know them well.

In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about?  My faith and my ethics.

What are your hobbies, interests?  I enjoy walking in the woods, caring for animals, gardening, kayaking, swimming and spending time with family, especially my grandbabies.

Do you have pets?  Yes, 2 dogs, 5 cats and 21 chickens

What is something most people don’t know about you?  That I have been skydiving.
