Why choose an endodontist? Your dentist has referred you to a specialist because endodontists are dentists who specialize in maintaining teeth through endodontic therapy — procedures involving the soft inner tissue of the teeth, called the pulp. All dentists are trained to diagnose and perform endodontic therapy; however, endodontists receive advanced education in this kind of treatment. They study root canal techniques and procedures for an additional two years. Endodontists are better able to diagnosis and treat difficult cases.
