At RA, we are proud of the work we do and the many ways we can help you live a productive and pain free life. We have a philosophy that is built upon high quality physical therapy treatment as well as education, prevention and ongoing home self-care. We believe that these core essential elements are very important to your overall physical recovery and will also aid in re-injury prevention. What is Physical Therapy? The Model Definition of Physical Therapy adopted by the American Physical Therapy Association, states that physical therapy includes: Examining individuals with impairment, functional limitation, and disability or other health related conditions in order to determine a diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention. Alleviating impairment and functional limitation by designing, implementing, and modifying therapeutic interventions. Preventing injury, impairment, functional limitation, and disability, including the promotion and maintenance of fitness, health, and quality of life in people of all ages. Engaging in consultation, education, and research. Physical Therapist Physical Therapists are educated and trained professionals that are skilled in understanding the interaction of all your body parts. Their hands-on approach begins with examination, diagnosis, and treatment of the immediate problem. Then they teach you how to take care of yourself by showing you how to do exercises and how to use your body properly to gain strength and mobility and prevent recurring injury. You’ll find them advising on proper posture and body motion in the work place, treating injuries, consulting on fitness, and administering physical therapy in the home. Today physical therapists provide help for every part of the body to everyone from infants to the elderly. Treatment The expertise and skill of a therapist’s hand during the employment of joint and soft tissue mobilization is key to identifying the problem. The Rehabilitation Program that is designed may include treatment such as joint and soft tissue mobilization, exercise and therapy on therapeutic machines and equipment, therapeutic exercises to be done during supervision and in a prescribed home program, modalities and educating patients on healthy lifestyle behaviors. Length of Treatment Sometimes your doctor will decide how often you come to therapy, other times your doctor will allow the therapist to determine the frequency of your treatments. The length of your treatment will vary by patient, however usually a treatment ranges from 30-60 minutes. You will continue your therapy sessions until you and your therapist decide you have achieved your goals. Do I need a referral from my doctor? You do not need a referral from your doctor for your first visit. However, if you do not have a referral you will need to obtain one before you can continue your therapy with a physical therapist. RA’s patients are primarily referred from Orthopedic Surgeons, Family Practitioners, and Neurosurgeons in the local community, with a great majority of referrals coming from orthopedists. This carefully developed and nurtured relationship places a premium on delivering excellent clinical outcomes and establishing and maintaining open lines of communication between patients, their physicians and the physical therapy clinician provider.
