About us

Shanu N. Kothari, MD, FACS, FASMBS, is a minimally invasive bariatric surgeon at Prisma Health in Greenville, South Carolina. Prior to joining Prisma Health, he worked at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he established their bariatric surgery program and started their minimally invasive bariatric surgery and advanced GI fellowship.

Dr. Kothari earned his Bachelor of Arts in biology and graduated magna cum laude from Indiana’s Anderson University, followed by a medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He went on to complete a residency at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation in Wisconsin and a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the Medical College of Virginia.

Dr. Kothari has held positions as an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Clinic and the director of Gundersen Health System’s Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery and has served on numerous surgical boards and committees. He is a Professor of Surgery USC School of Medicine, Greenville. He is the past president for both the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Southwestern Surgical Congress. He is also the incoming President of the Fellowship Council.

His passion for research and surgical quality is evident with over 300 national presentations and lectures, published journal articles and editorial contributions. Dr. Kothari is currently serving as the Jean and H. Harlan Stone Chair of Surgery in the Upstate.
