About Chiropractic What is Chiropractic? A natural, non-invasive approach to health care. Chiropractic is based on the scientific FACT that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism controlled by the central nervous system: that is, your brain and spinal cord. Your spine not only HOUSES a part of your central nervous system, it also acts as a distribution center. The nerves that exit at each level of the spine control and coordinate virtually EVERY organ of the body, and therefore determine the function (or health) of the body as a whole. When these vertebrae become misaligned or lose normal motion, malfunction (dis-ease) of the tissues and organs throughout the body result. Chiropractic care focuses on improving the function of each patient without the use of drugs or surgery, which do nothing to permanently affect body function. Doctors of Chiropractic (DC’s) are certainly portal of entry providers (such as dentists or optometrists) and in some states, including Illinois, are licensed as primary care physicians. DC’s are recognized by governmental health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Workers’ Compensation boards, to name a few. Every year, more than 30 million Americans see chiropractors as part of their regular health care programs. With over 84,000 licensed chiropractors nationwide and more than 10,000 students currently enrolled in chiropractic school, it is the fastest growing health care profession. Chiropractors also help patients with osteoarthritis, spinal disk conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains, and strains. However, the scope of conditions that chiropractors manage or provide care for is not limited to the common pains and problems listed above. Chiropractors also have the training to help a variety of conditions such as allergies, asthma, digestive disorders, and other disorders as research continues to develop.
