Selective serum re-absorption inhibitors (SSRIs) are a generic term for antidepressants, and are commonly used in the treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anorexia nervosa. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) selectively inhibit the reuptake of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) in central nervous system (CNS) synapses, thus increasing the intra-synaptic concentration of serotonin.
