SAP BW Introduction

BW - Business Warehouse is SAP's data warehousing application. It uses the SAP NetWeaver application server but can run on many different DBs. Improvements come with each new version of SAP BW.

SAP BW can run on SAP HANA DB. There are two flavors of SPA BW powered by SAP HANA.

SAP BW on HANA is SAP's existing NetWeaver BW data warehouse which runs on SAP HANA.

SAP now supports SAP HANA as the underlying DB for the NetWeaver BW Data Warehouse. The SAP HANA is much faster than regular RDBMS like Oracle, and MS SQL Server. The purpose of SAP Hana BW on HANA is to combine the power of SAP HANA and BW.

The architecture of SAP BW contains,

1. Extraction Enterprise - The data is collected centrally in SAP BW, the data is usually extracted from various sources and loaded into SAP BW. SAP BW supports all kinds of sources both relational and multi-dimensional SAP and you can perform technical cleanup and apply business rules to consolidate the data for evaluations. The consolidated data is stored in the enterprise data warehouse. This entire process is called extraction transformation and loading or ETL.
