About us

Wai Lee, MD is the Director of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the Smith Institute for Urology at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. His clinical interests include urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, complex reconstruction of the pelvis and lower urinary tract, neuromodulation, and recurrent urinary tract infections.After completing his urology residency at Stony Brook University Hospital, Dr. Lee completed his fellowship at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, with specialization in male and female voiding dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and neurogenic bladder. Dr. Lee gained extensive experience with robotic reconstructive surgery while at Virginia Mason. He also participated in an international medical mission to Uganda to repair vaginal fistulas in women suffering from obstetrical trauma.Dr. Lee's research interests include novel approaches to neuromodulation and chemodenervation for overactive bladder and healthcare disparities in urology. Dr. Lee has presented his research at numerous national meetings. His work has been published in leading national and international journals including the Journal of Urology, Neurourology and Urodynamics, Urology, Urogynecology, Urologic Clinics of North America, and the International Urogynecology Journal.He was recently awarded the 2023 Outstanding Teaching Award by the Urology Department and recognized as a Center of Excellence for Sacral Neuromodulation a treatment for overactive bladder, urinary urgency incontinence, urinary retention, and fecal incontinence. He is also board certified in both Urology and Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery by the American Board of Urology.The conditions Dr. Lee treats can have a profound social and emotional impact on the individual.
